Newsletter – Oct 9th 2012
Dear Dancer,
We are happy to be back at the Recreation and Parks Division Dudes and Daisies building this week and hope to see you there. Both the morning technique class and the evening dance class and party will be held there.
You may have noticed (or will notice, once you get past this foreword) that we have changed the title of the practice party to “Open Dancing/Practice Session” (an unwieldy title, I grant you). We are doing this to high-light the point that these parties (excuse me, these “Open Dancing/Practice Sessions”) are opportunities to strengthen and hone the skills you are all working so hard to learn in the weekly classes.
We originally started holding the par…I mean “Open Dancing/Practice Sessions” in response to our students’ lament that, though we were teaching them to dance ballroom, there was no venue in which to do so. So we started a venue. The ensuing conversations went (and to some extent, still goes) like this:
Students: We don’t have any place in Siskiyou County to ballroom dance.
Us: Alright, we will start holding practice parties, a place for you to come to practice your dancing, to dance and to socialize.
(We do that: months pass)
Us: How come we don’t see you at the practice parties?
Students: Oh, we’re not good enough, yet, to come to a party!
Us: (Blue smoke issues from ears).
We have had this conversation more than once and, so, realizing that people (especially beginning dancers) may be a little intimidated by the thought of coming to a “dance party”, we want to re-focus everyone’s attention on the value to their training and other benefits of the…Open Dancing/Practice Sessions we hold on Saturday nights. Hence the change of title (don’t worry, it will still be fun).
Only know a few dances? Don’t worry about it; we are there not only as hosts, but as resources and will gladly take time to teach you the basic step of a dance you don’t yet know, lend assistance on a particularly tricky step of a dance you do know or just refresh you memory on this last weeks latest step. And though we play music for all of the dances, we also take requests and will play more of certain dances (i.e. the ones you know) if asked in order to make the evenings worth your while.
So whaddaya say, give it a shot.
See you on dance floor this week.
