Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – January 24th 2022
Dear All,
As January winds down (only one week left) we find ourselves pondering the ephemeral and transitory nature of the universe. Everything seems to be nothing more than a process of moving from here to there. Flux seems to be the only constant in current existence (even the word “current”, commonly defined as “now-ish”. Implies that “now” is just a moment in that process of moving from the past to the future, the way a “current” flows from upriver to downriver, even though you are standing in one place experiencing it).
How is this relevant to a Ballroom Dance newsletter? How not? Dancing, too, is a process of moving from here to there (as in, yesterday I could not dance, today I train, tomorrow my skills at dancing will knock folks socks off {I mean, why do people who don’t dance need socks anyway? They’re certainly under-using their feet, so extra padding isn’t really necessary for them. Is it?})!
So, celebrate the transitory ephemeralness of the universe by continuing on your own path (dancing) from here to there. I mean, we could trudge from here to there, or we could dance from here to there. Your choice. The only other choice any of us need to make is whether the “there” we move toward will be better than the “here” that currently is (see how I smuggled the word “current” back in to the narrative? That wasn’t an accident).
Do you want “there” to see you as a worse dancer or a better one? We think you know the answer to that, and we think you know the solution: dance classes and even more dance classes. The more you come to classes, the faster “here” becomes “there”, the better “there” becomes . And, to be honest, the more “there” there will be. In this universe of never-ending flux, the faster you go, the farther you will get and the more you will have left over when you get “there” (but as the process is endless, the Virginia Woolf quote “There is no there, there” was more spot-on than she realized!).
Too philosophical? We agree (way out of our league, that’s for sure!). The solution to too much philosophy? Easy: dance your ass off. We have been dancing for many, many years, and if there is one thing we can guarantee, it’s that our asses are smaller now than they were when we began (not to mention our depleted capacity for philosophical meanderings!).
It’s good for the “there”, good for the “then” and it’s good for the “here” and good for the “now”. And finally, it’s good for your body, good for your mind and good for your soul. Good just doesn’t get any “gooder”.
Come join us this week and as many weeks to come as you have.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon

p.s. We are still respecting the mask protocols established by the state (masks not required if vaccinated, if not: masks. (We monitor many other studios in California and Oregon. This seems to be the standard unanimous protocol. We will keep checking and modifying as per industry standards, medical understandings and simple, classical logic – as needed.)
