Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California- February 21st 2022
Dear All,
This week we thought we’d give you a break from our usual rantings and ravings about dance and its ensuant benefits (colloquially known as “dance rants”) and instead, spend this time revealing to you the solution to one of the Unsolved Mysteries of the Universe. You know the one: if we call it a fork because it has four tines, then what do we call it if it only has three tines (or two, as many early “forks” have had)?
This is not a topic related to dance, but since it is written that “knowledge will set you free” knowing the answer to this will free your minds and make them more open to understanding the deeper mysteries of dance itself, which will accelerate, among other things, learning. So, on to the solution . . .
It’s very simple, really: if it has four tines, we call it a fork (or, if you will, “a fourk”). So if it has three tines, we can only call it . . . (drumroll, please) . . . a threek! Only we will spell it “threaque” to minimize any similarities to the word “freak”. We considered the word “trident” but a trident, by definition, has a six-foot haft (or handle) and if the simple absence of a single tine disqualifies it from being called a “fork”, then the absence of a six-foot haft certainly disqualifies it from being called a “trident”.
And, by extension, a two-tined version would be called a “tewk” (we can’t spell it “twok”, or people would pronounce it “twak” -and we can’t have that kind of language at the dinner table, can we?!).
Mystery solved. Knowing this, I can just feel my mind relaxing and releasing the tensions caused by ignorance. Now all of the brain cells once engaged in the angst of not knowing and the stress of wrestling unsuccessfully with one of the mysteries of the universe can be devoted to the pursuit of happiness, beauty and love, the chief avenue of that pursuit, hopefully, being in the form of dance.
Come to class refreshed and receptive this week and watch how much more quickly you will be able to learn this week’s dance steps!
We look forward to again being graced by your presence.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon

p.s. We are still respecting the mask protocols established by the state (masks not required if vaccinated, if not: masks. (We constantly monitor many other studios in California and Oregon {and a rare few across the country}. This seems to be the standard unanimous protocol. We will keep checking and modifying as per industry standards, medical understandings and simple, classical logic – as needed.) now pending review . . .
