Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – April 25th 2022
Dear All,
Well, we’ve rounded the final bend and are on the finishing stretch for the month of April. This is the last week of Quickstep and Swing/Jive. We will be quickly reviewing everything you learned and adding a couple of “big finish” steps (translation: lots o’ fun {not related to the O’Funns from Dublin, Ireland}).
You won’t want to miss it. It will give you more to do (and practice) at our next Dance/Practice Party at Lake Shastina (Friday, May 6th). Come and try out your newly acquired skills “on the fly”, as they say. We will be there to help you iron out any difficulties that may arise.
Next month (May) we will be slowing things down by offering Viennese Waltz (Wednesdays) and Rumba (Thursdays). “Hold on”, we hear you cry out, “how can Viennese Waltz be considered a “slow” dance by any stretch of the imagination?” Well sir, (or madam or mademoiselle), simply because we will start out teaching the Viennese steps at Slow Waltz Tempo so that everyone can build up the coordination and technique (which will allow speed to develop all by itself, later). We will allow the speed of the music to accelerate slowly as the class begins to “get it”, but this month the Viennese will not be as much about quickness as thoroughness.
And, of course, the Rumba is already the slowest of the Latin dances (except for Bolero, but Bolero is so dramatic, no one notices the fact that it is actually slower than the Rumba) which makes the Rumba the best and easiest dance with which to begin studying the Latin dances.
And because Cuban Action (the underlying technique of the Rumba) is also used in Cha-cha, Salsa and Merengue, we will be focusing more time on it this month, helping you to develop this oh-so-helpful technique. That will give you a leg up (so to speak) on the Cha-cha, Salsa and Merengue, speeding up your over-all progress when those dances come around.
So, in a nutshell (a big nutshell), come to this week’s classes to round out your skills in Quickstep and Swing/Jive and then join us next month to get the essentials of Viennese Waltz and Rumba under your belts (way, way under your belts . . . like two to three feet under your belts. That’s where most of us keep our feet).
As always, we look forward to seeing you in classes. Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon

p.s. We are relaxing Mask Protocols.. We will encourage the un-vaccinated to do what you feel is best for yourselves and will happily wear our own masks when dealing with you specifically should you so desire. Otherwise, we are all on our own, now, as so-called adults should be. Make your decisions accordingly but make them based on real information.
p.p.s. What do you call it when The Lone Ranger takes you out for dinner and a movie? A “masked man date”.
