Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – October 18th 2022

Dear All,

Tarantism.    According to one of my sources, it is defined as “a mania characterized by an uncontrollable urge to dance”.  According to another (and far more interesting) source, it is defined as “a paradoxical state where one has an overwhelming urge to overcome one’s melancholy by dancing”.

The first definition implies no choice, and the second definition carries at least a chance of a choice.  Our advice to you is to voluntarily come to class and deliberately learn how to dance lest it be thrust upon you by a power or powers unknown (thereby keeping the power of choice in your own hands {or, in this case, your own feet}).

Not that being afflicted with the involuntary desire to dance is . . . well . . . an affliction necessarily.  We have lived with it for years and look at us (not too closely!).  But why choose to not choose when you can choose to choose (those of you who suspect that this is turning into a dissertation on trains {what with all of this talk of “choo-choos”} rest assured, we are not going there).

Come learn the joys of voluntarily dancing.  Do it now before the uncontrollable urge to break into dance casts widespread doubt upon the reputation of your sanity (those of you for whom it is not already too late!) so that, even if you do fall into a fit of uncontrolled dancing, you will at least look cool (thereby perhaps inspiring a new Hollywood musical {it could happen!})

Bolero on Wednesday night, American style Waltz on Thursday.  Be there . . . your very reputations are at stake!

See you in class.

Cheers,

Rick and Peggy Nixon

p.s.  We have relaxed Mask Protocols..  We will encourage the un-vaccinated to do what you feel is best for yourselves and will happily don our own masks when dealing with you specifically should you so desire.  Otherwise, we are all on our own, now, as so-called adults should be.  Make your decisions accordingly but make them based on real information.  Don’t be afraid to wear them, but don’t feel that you must.

p.p.s.    What do you call it when The Lone Ranger takes you out for dinner and a movie?  A “masked man date”!
