Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – June 5th 2023

Dear All,

With all of our local restaurants converting over to their “summer hours”, we asked ourselves “should we have summer hours too?”.   If so, what would they be?  It crossed our minds that we could make our classes an hour later, so you would all have more time to play outside in the summer light, but if we did that, we would run afoul of the early-to-bed-early-to rise crowd (and trust me – you don’t want to even face those people when they have been deprived of their sleep {even just an hour!}).

Then we thought maybe we could go an hour early so that the play-in-the-sun crowd could go out again after class to finish playing in the sun.  But they always get cranky when they are brought indoors early (even if they get to go back out again – like little kids being called in to dinner on a summer’s eve).  So that was out, and that, my friends, didn’t leave many (if any) other options.

Then we remembered a lament that more than one of you had made at the end of last month: “we can only come Wednesdays, but we would really like to learn Quickstep in June”.  We realized that those of you who had commitments elsewhere on one of our class nights were only getting training in either Latin Dancing or Smooth Dancing but not both.  Then it hit us.

Why don’t we swap out dance styles every other month.  So, as an experiment, this month we are going to teach Quickstep (a Smooth dance) on Wednesdays and Salsa (a Latin dance) on Thursdays and see how it goes.  If it works, we will then flip back and forth from month to month, thereby giving everyone a more balanced training regimen.

Now, we are going to give each of you an opportunity that science has never given its hapless experimental victims (oops, I mean test subjects) and that is: a say in the matter.  Let us know if this works for you or not.  If it does, it will become our new system.  If it does not, we will pretend that it was a “summer hours” issue and drop it like a hot potato (show of hands: how many of you have actually held a hot potato in their hands . . . yeah, that’s what we thought!)

So come to class with your eyes peeled, your ears to the ground and your noses to the wind and we will gladly correct the bad posture this pose automatically engenders.  In any event, let us know if this works out for you.  Or not.

We look forward to seeing you in classes this week/month (and to hearing from you afterwards).

(Weekly Class schedule listed below.)

Cheers,

Rick and Peggy Nixon
