Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – September 5th 2023

Dear All,

It’s September, and that means Back-To-School, kiddie-winkies!   And what could be more fun than coming back to school with a Swing/Jive class?  And, too, what could be more nostalgic than coming back to school with a Waltz class?  And (yet again), what could be better than coming back to school for both?  Yet that is what you’ll be doing, those of you who will do both.

We will be holding the Swing/Jive class on Wednesdays this month and the Waltz class on Thursdays according to our alternating-alternating system (for those of you who only can make it to one specific night a week).   We are researching a wider variety of Swing/Jive steps in the hopes of finding some new yet basic figures for you to learn, but many of the old favorites are definitely going to resurface since they are among the basic training curriculum.

And as we said in the last newsletter, we are going to be paying more attention to syncopation in the Waltz class, as it will accelerate your abilities to lead and follow in a more free-form manner, giving you more access to any given step at any given moment.  It may seem like small potatoes in an art form that already has too many big potatoes, but trust us, this skill will ultimately be the final skill for you to master and you are going to start learning how to do it now.

It is our hope, this month, to give you the rudiments of understanding this phenomenon so that it will develop with every new figure you learn as you learn it, paving the way to accomplishing your goals in less time than most schools end up taking.  And, of course, you will be learning the basic steps (and a few of the more interesting, more complex steps) as always, with the syncopations we’ll be adding making it seem like you are learning more steps than you really are (and causing those who may be watching you dance think that you know a lot more steps than you currently do).  Sneaky, eh?

So come back to school and learn these fabulous dance steps (of the fabulous dances offered this month) and the valuable techniques that will make you look . . . well . . . fabulous!  We look forward to seeing you in class, both our continuing and returning students!

Cheers,

Rick and Peggy Nixon
