Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – July 8th 2024
Dear All,
Hot enough for you? If so, the swamp cooler at Mt. Fitness has been doing a splendid job of keeping it cool enough for you. Come join us for a refreshing plunge into a cool environment of dancing pleasure. Also, the holiday last week pretty much made sure that this week will be, to all intents and purposes, the first week of classes for July, so come and start at the beginning like everyone else.
Now, on with our benefits of Ballroom Dance. Last week we covered a few (but by no means all) of the physical benefits. This week:
The mental benefits of Ballroom Dance. First off, memory enhancement. As you learn (memorize) more and more steps, you are building a cognitive structure of not only memory, but memory attached to bodily functioning. This is one of the reasons that Ballroom Dance has been found (by those whose job it is to find out such things) to be the only physical activity that combats Alzheimer’s (lets call it a psycho-physical activity as it goes as much beyond the body as it goes beyond the mind).
And it is never too early to start constructing your own mechanism to keep any kind of dementia at bay. There is not only the building and storing of memories, there is also the selecting of those memories to fit the situations one encounters on the dance floor, the guiding and responding to the choices so selected, and the almost subconscious choosing of steps that are several steps ahead of where one is currently in the dance. It is almost psychic in nature (but not really) and prognosticative. In fact, it could be said that one predicts a future and then takes specific steps (so to speak) to physically create it. Futurism 101, it could be called.
No wonder Ballroom Dance teaches men how to multi-task (considered to be an impossible feat in the “real world”! {speaking of impossible feet . . . oh, never mind) It would also teach women how to multi-task if they didn’t already know how to do it, but it will strengthen that skill in women as well to a degree that would surprise one)! It could be said that couple dancing (Ballroom) is simply multi-tasking to music (to strip it of all artistic endeavor).
Also, if one thinks back to one’s early days of learning how to dance and how hard it was to comprehend simple steps, and then fast forward to today to consider the steps that one is struggling to comprehend now, it should be clear to one that one is dealing with a much higher level of complexity than one was at the beginning. And that is one of the secret benefits of Ballroom Dancing: the development of the ability to process higher and higher levels of complexity. That is a never-ending process; the longer you train, the more complexity you develop the ability to process. And we guarantee that this will cross over into your daily lives as well, making you better at handling complex situations!
But here we are again, threatening to bury your cellphones and computers in a plethora of information. Time for us to wrap this up. If you do want to pursue these subjects more deeply, come to class and experience them directly and/or talk to us at class’s end. That’s one of the reasons we’re there.
The other reason we are there is to teach you how to dance. Come to class and take advantage of us!
We look forward to seeing you there.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon
