Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – November 5th 2024
Dear All,
I was going to start this with an apolitical political statement, but just mentioning the word politics generated an unclean feeling in my soul, so I won’t. Now all I need is a segue to the topic of dancing, and if this isn’t it, then I don’t know a segue when I see one,
This month we will be teaching Waltz on Wednesday nights and Cha-cha on Thursday nights. But wait (we hear you say), didn’t you just teach Waltz in October? Well, yes, we did. But that was on Thursday nights and, more importantly, that was International (or English) Style and this month we will be teaching American (or Social) Style. Oh (we hear you say), that does make a difference. We heartily approve! (Don’t be alarmed that we might be “hearing voices”; we aren’t . . . no, not even from you . . . I don’t care what you say, we aren’t hearing voices!)
For those of you who may be wondering what the difference between International and American styles is, the main difference is that in the International Style, one must always maintain a hip to hip (or rib-cage to rib-cage) connection. In the American Style, you are allowed to break that connection which allows for things like Under Arm Turns and Grapevines and Chasses with (again) Under Arm Turns included, which opens up a whole new world of possibilities, many of which we will be offering this month (and which last month’s Waltz dancers did not get a shot at, so they can come, too). Fun, right? Right!
And Cha-cha will incorporate a lot of the same figures that we taught in the Rumba last month plus some new variations, many of which one may adapt back to Rumba figures, thereby increasing your Rumba vocabulary as well. So again, win-win with the Cha-cha (and the Waltz)!
We look forward again to seeing as many of you there as we can (if you’re there, we’ll see you). Join us for the fun, for the increase in knowledge, for the improvements in balance and coordination and for the camaraderie that only comes from dancing with another human being. It will serve you all and serve you well for the rest of your lives.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon
