Another week, another dance step (or somewhere between 8 and 12 dance steps if you count both classes). By our count that comes to somewhere around a dollar a dance step, depending on how many steps we teach per class.
Well, considering that the old song “Ten cents A Dance” was written in 1930, and considering that in 1930, the cost of bread was ten cents/loaf and the cost gasoline was coming in at around twenty cents/gallon, the inflation rate for dancing is considerably lower than both bread (now at $6.00/loaf) and gasoline (now at $4.59/gal.).
“But Rick” I hear you say, “one dance step doth not a whole dance make”. To which I reply: “Who, in this day and age, uses words like ‘doth’? Get out of here!”. But to take your point, a standard dance runs about 3 minutes (and has always run about 3 minutes), and there are 20 segments of 3 minutes in an hour, so an hour of dancing at 10 cents a dance would have cost $2.00 in 1930.
Currently our classes can be had for $6 an hour. At that same rate of inflation, bread would only cost 30 cents/loaf today and gasoline would only cost 60 cents/gallon. Bay Area (San Francisco Bay, that is) ballroom classes run around $18 hour these days which we presume is that standard 2024 rate.
So, you can come to classes and save money! See you in Waltz on Wednesday or Cha-cha on Thursday or both (double your pleasure, double your fun!).
