Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – April 1st 2025

Dear All,

I was putting one of my free hours to good use the other day by composing a ballroom dance parody of “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport” (‘Tiny Kangaroo Dance Sport’ {aka The Wallaby Open Competitions in Australia) and the last verse (“Dance on my grave when I’m dead, Fred”) gave me one of my most brilliant ideas  ever (a sad, sad commentary on the brilliance of all of my other ideas).

I am going to have my cemetery plot covered with an all-weather wooden floor and my tombstone is going to have the words “Dance on my grave” chiseled into it.  Research has shown me that the average grave size is three feet by eight feet.  So, if Peggy is buried next to me, together we will have a six-foot by eight-foot dance floor (close to but not quite a square.)

And then it occurred to me that if we could enlist more people in this project, we could (eventually) have ourselves (or rather, those selves of future generations who dance) a pretty good-sized dance floor – outdoors and in a pristine, natural landscape.

I know, I know . . . more people are gravitating towards cremation these days, but that culprit research has once again turned up information that may put the skids on that trend. To wit: it takes 28 gallons of fuel to consume one (average-sized) body or the amount of gas to fill one (big) SUV gas tank and releasing 540 lbs. of greenhouse gases in the process.  Multiply that times the thousands if not millions of people leaning towards cremation and the whole idea of cremation begins to look bleaker and bleaker, even only 1 million adopt cremation, that makes for 540 million lbs of greenhouse gases released each year.

So, we are looking for people to join us in creating the world’s first-ever out-door ever-growing dance floor.  Who’s in?  If enough of you let me know, we can begin research on just how to pull this off.  And it’s not as if the land isn’t being put to good use, now, is it?

OK, here is where most of you are expecting me to say APRIL FOOL! And we can all have a good laugh (those of us who are ghoulish enough to laugh at death’s inevitability) and so, as not to disappoint you:  APRIL FOOL!

But the April Foolery involved here is that we are not entirely unserious about this and would like to hear from as many of you as might be willing to join us in this enterprise which would  allow us to proceed with a full study of the possibilities.

Oh, and we are starting the Tango tomorrow (Wednesday) night and the Salsa on Thursday.  Make sure you join us and get in on the ground level.  And since 2025 seems to be about adding new figures that we have never taught before, expect some new figures that we have never taught before.  What fun!

Join us for fun, entertainment and the inner warmth that comes from acquiring new knowledge!

Cheers,

Rick and Peggy Nixon
