Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – June 12th 2017

Dear All,

Just to alert you:  No Parkinson’s class again this week.  It should be back next week.

All other classes are as scheduled.  It is still not too late to join the Foxtrot class if you are a beginner (and never too late if you are a more experienced dancer who wants to improve his or her skills).

A little known historical fact: Foxtrot was originally spelled Fawkesdraught (or even more originally: Fawkes’ Draught) after a beverage invented by Guy Fawkes (oh. . .and another little known historical fact:  Guy Fawkes invented beverages) that had the unusual effect upon the drinker of causing him or her to leap to his or her feet and start cavorting about in an oddly smooth manner that came to be known by the name of the drink that caused it: Fawkes’ Draught.

And it came down the ages by that name (with only the one minor change in the spelling to Fawkesdraught). Until an American named Harry Fox encountered the beverage (and its effects) on a trip to England in the early 1900s.  Being of an entrepreneurial nature, he codified the movements into a dance, changed the spelling to make it look like he was the originator and introduced the movements (but, alas, not the beverage -prohibition, you know) to the American public.  The rest is history.

And that’s the story of the Foxtrot, folks.  Remember, you heard it here, first.

See you in class.
