Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – March 7th 2022

Dear All,

As the snow season slips more decidedly behind us, we should all whisper a prayer of thanks to St. O’Boggin, (the Irish Catholic patron saint of sledding) for a fairly vigorous year of winter sports (they were still sledding on Snowman’s Hill just this last weekend!).  I suppose we could extend St. O’Boggin’s purview to cover skiing as well to keep the ski crowd (or skeeks, as we call them, for short {much in the same way that we refer to young kittens as “weebs” short for wee beasties}) happy, but we haven’t yet given up on unearthing (un-heavening?) a patron saint specific to skiing.  We will let you know when we are successful.

What has all of this to do with dance, you may ask?  This: it has been brought to our attention by more than one of our skiing students (skeek students?) over the course of more than just a few years that many of the basic movement skills of ballroom dance are the same skills required on the slopes, and it has occurred to us that a Spring, Summer and Autumn of taking dance lessons will leave you better prepared to have a superior skiing season come Winter.

So as the snow season continues to slip more and more decidedly behind us, we encourage, nay we exhort all of you to come to our classes during the “dry” months and develop your ski-skills so that you can be the envy of the slopes next Winter as well as, perhaps, learning to dance as well (make that learning to dance well as well).  Once again, a win-win scenario provided to you by the magical world of dance.

And even if you don’t ski, you will have as much fun as you would if you did.  More, perhaps, (but we will leave you to hash that one out with the skeeks).

Don’t forget, Tango will start this week, so if you missed last week and are pounding your chests in grief for having missed the first class, give your chests a break and rejoice: you didn’t!  Come to the first Tango class of March and jump in on the ground level with everyone else this Wednesday.

We look forward to the pleasure of seeing you all in class this week.

Cheers,

Rick and Peggy Nixon

p.s.  Mask protocols are being relaxed in accordance with various studios around the state (and our own sick-to-deathedness of breathing filtered air).  We will encourage the un-vaccinated to do what they feel is best for yourselves and will be happy to wear our masks when dealing specifically with you should you so desire.  Otherwise, we are all on our own, now, as so-called adults should be.  Make your decisions accordingly.
