Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – April 17th 2023
Dear All,
My head is bare as are my feet. My pant legs are rolled up to just above my calf in the finest of Tom Sawyer traditions and my sleeves (to my elbows) as well. And it is still morning. If that doesn’t say Spring, then what does?
You know what else says Spring? Cavorting about in wild and joyous abandon (some persons’ definition of dance), that’s what. Of all the Latin Dances, Swing/Jive could be said to be the wildest, most joyous and abandoned of all the dances. Perhaps the only one to which the word “cavorting” can be applied.
What say we all of us contribute to the “Springification” of the region through the process in which we, ourselves engage/indulge in cavorts of wild and joyous abandon by coming to the Swing/Jive class and learning the basics of cavorting and abandon? Cavorting 101 we could call it and the region if not the world will be Springier for it. Come to class and do your part to convince Mother Nature/the procession of the axis/the Fairies of Regeneration/any other force of nature/any other force, period that we welcome this advent of the awakening of the planet which we call Spring!
And though Ballroom Dance is a highly structured art form, take our word for it: there comes a time when everything about it becomes totally free form. Once one masters Lead-Follow technique and has a working vocabulary of dozens upon dozens of steps in any one dance, one can divide those steps up into smaller and smaller segments and lead ones partner (follow ones partner) in the wildest (heretofore unseen in the history of dance) combinations at will . . . no, even better . . . at a whim! The whimsical cavorting about in wild and joyous abandon? I don’t know about you, but to us, that says Freedom!
This level of proficiency is what you are all working towards whether you know it or not. It is the inevitable outcome whatever other goals you may have for learning how to dance. All you have to do is stick with it and it will happen. Of course, the more often you come to class, the faster it will happen, but you know that, don’t you? And the faster it happens, the more time you have left over for simply (or complexly) doing it.
Next week we will extol the “Spring” reasons for coming to Tango class. For now, the qualifications for “enough is enough” have been exceeded, so we politely abdicate this period of time which you have so graciously devoted to us back to you. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Be seeing you this week in class.
See class schedule below.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon
