Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – July 4th 2023

Dear All,

Another month, another two dances.  I know we told some of you that we were going to teach Tango this month, but when we looked at our records, we discovered that it was the Foxtrot’s turn, so Foxtrot it is (on Thursday nights)!  And on Wednesdays, Samba.  So, a night of hot, fiery vigor followed by a night of cool, elegant smoothness.  A perfect month for one and all!

We will be focusing on the American Style Foxtrot, this month as we have received a slightly larger number of requests to do so, and there is a lot of fun that can be had that simply isn’t available to the International Style (and vice-versa).

That means you will get Under Arm Turns and Grapevines and Side-by-sides (amongst others) that just don’t exist in the International Style (due to the fact that you aren’t allowed to detach your ribcage from your partner’s ribcage).  The word “whee” would come to mind if it weren’t so inelegant (and let’s face it, the Foxtrot is the most elegant of all the dances!).  Your task this month, dear students, is to come up with an elegant counterterm for “whee!” (if you decide to accept it, that is).

And Samba!  Fun steps, fun music, fun body movements which, I guess, adds up to . . . fun fun!  And so very good for you, too.  Will accentuate the technique a little more this time (but only a little more) so you can get that particular fun going as well as reap that particular benefit.  Be prepared to be worked as you play this month.  Done correctly, the Samba will strengthen your legs, slim your waist, improve your balance and significantly develop your coordination.  That makes it a tetrafecta of benefits (which is a trifecta plus one, for those of you who want to know {the rest of you just ignore this parenthetical insert [even though it is yet another triple parenthetical insert!]}).

Come to classes this week and learn not only how to do dance these two dances, but also learn how work and fun can be the same thing at the same time!  A valuable skill to have these days (or any day, for that matter).

We look forward to seeing you all in classes this week.

Cheers, (and, dare I say it:  “Whee!”)
