Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – July 2nd 2024
Dear All,
We have decided to do a series of short lectures on the benefits of Couple (Ballroom) Dancing. To keep each entry short, each week we will look at a different aspect of Couple (Ballroom) Dancing and by the end of the month, you will hopefully have a more enlightened perspective on just how you are benefitting your lives and yourselves simply by coming to class and learning something really fun. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
This week we will cover the physical benefits.
First off, dance is good for endurance (aka a strong wind). It has been determined (by those whose job it is to determine such things) that if one were to go to a three-hour Ballroom Dance party and dance every single dance, it is the physical equivalent of running 17 miles (without that “dear God, I’ve just run 17 miles!” sensation and the attendant exhaustion {in fact one is left feeling exhilarated at the end of such a party [unlike a 17-mile marathon]!}). And an intelligently designed Ballroom Dance (aka a Ball) will make dancing every dance easy by alternating fast dances with slow dances, so . . . no problem! And your muscles will also develop the ability to work for longer periods of time as well, so: win-win!
Besides muscular endurance (and wind), you will also develop muscular strength, in that dancing works (develop/strengthens) not only the muscles one uses in everyday life, but also muscles that don’t get worked by daily activity (not to mention muscles that many other activities {like sports, recreational endeavors, even many of the martial arts} don’t reach). Too little attention is paid to these muscles, but they have been found to be essential to the well-being of the larger muscle groups (upon which we focus so much in our everyday endeavors) by supporting and assisting them. Your intrinsic strength will increase in ways you may not be aware of (but still get to use).
So: endurance, strength . . . what else? Try “balance” my friends. Many of us are approaching an age where balance is becoming an issue, and learning different and better ways to remain balanced by strengthening our balancing skills could make a big difference between a healthy lifestyle and a debilitating fall. And for those of you who are not yet approaching that age, by learning dancing skills, you will find that when you do approach that age, you will already have developed the balance skills and remain on firm footing (so to speak) in your golden years (thereby making your golden years truly golden).
Deliberately and cognitively developing ones balancing skills will create a superior sense of balance that will serve you well the rest of your lives. And there is your “three-legged stool” of stability: endurance, strength and balance. And all developed whilst merely having fun. What more could one ask? Join us next week and find out!).
We could go much more in depth, but only at the risk of turning this already-too-long newsletter into a small book. Come to class where not only will you continue (and continually) learn to dance (and dance well), but where we will also be happy to talk to you afterwards about these and other benefits of Ballroom dance. Join us.
See you there.
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon
