Ballroom Newsletter, Siskiyou County & Northern California – October 29th 2024
Dear All,
Did somebody say: “Hallowe’en”? Only everybody! Did somebody say: “scary movies”? Only everybody! Did somebody say: “costumes and candy”? Only everybody!
Now for the real question: Did somebody say “come to dance class on Hallowe’en” . . . (the sound of crickets in the distance . . . the lonely wail of wind on high, barren plateaux . . . the silence of nobody even trying to clear their throats for fear of drawing attention, the eerie stillness of wolves not howling in the night as they silently draw nearer . . . nearer . . .)? So . . . nobody then?
Well, we are going to be there, and as an enticement to all youse guys and goyles, we are going to open the class up to a wider variety of training: if anyone has a step or a technique they would like to work on, join us and we will address it for you in class on Halloween (Thursday) night (or, if you prefer, “Thursnight”).
Any step from any dance we have taught any of you over the years or which you might have seen elsewhere. Just ask and we will gladly help you work on it. And if nobody has any step, technical aspect or questions to ask, we will just as gladly carry on with the Waltz curriculum. Your choice.
We won’t be wearing costumes ourselves (even though it has been a long time {seven years} since Hallowe’en has fallen on a class night) so as not to discourage anybody from coming (“well, I wanted to go to dance class, but I didn’t have a costume”). That doesn’t mean that you can’t wear one if you want to. In fact, you are more than welcome. Or . . . we can all consider ourselves to be masquerading as dance instructors and dance students (but just for the one night!)
Now, a quick word about November: cold. (That was about as quick as we could make it.) Less quick: in November we will be doing Cha-cha on Thursday nights, to get the pulse rate and body heat up, and on Wednesday nights, we will be doing Waltz again, but this time American (aka “Social”) style which means lots of openings up, underarm turns, chasses and other steps with single-handed handholds, etc.) to differentiate it from October’s Waltz (International {aka “British”} style) where none of that is allowed to happen. Why, it will be like a whole new dance!
But do come this week for one last shot at Rumba (Wednesday) and Waltz (or whatever {Thursday}).
Who do we look forward to seeing in class this week? Only everybody!
Cheers,
Rick and Peggy Nixon
